She lives!!!!!!

Okay, so I kind of disappeared for a REALLY long time. I’m sorry. No excuses, I just sort of sucked at writing, let alone even remembering I had this little blog. But I’m back. I’ll give a super quick re-cap since I disappeared:

2014

Mike completed a truck driving course, and together we determined that was not right for our family.

Towards the end of the truck driving course we discovered I was pregnant!!!

We took a week long trip to Cuba and soaked up lots of sun.

Mike became a FedEx courier, we found the job that fit our family.

In December, two whole weeks late, we welcomed little Gavin into the world.

The year of maternity leave – I loved spending my time with Gavin

Nova Scotia was hammered with snow and ice – so much so our driveway ended up 8 feet longer than normal and the ice bent the rim on one of my tires!

I decided to enter the world of direct sales and became a Steeped Tea consultant. I love their teas and love the company

We traveled to Ontario twice (once for a Steeped Tea conference, and once just because)

My mom came to visit several time, my brother and father also made a trip each out to see us and baby Gavin.

Our cat, Barkis, went missing for 10 very long and stressful days.

I left my Guide unit and joined a Pathfinder unit.

November 30th rolled and around, and I made my return to work and Gavin started Day Care.

December 10 we celebrated Gavin’s first birthday.

Mike changed careers at FedEx, and became a ramp handler

I finally re-discovered this blog and am now going to drive you all nuts again!

I made a Duvet!

Last year I shared Mike’s and my busy Labour Day weekend with you and in it I showed you a picture of the duvet cover I made for our bed. While I am crazy proud of it, I have to admit it was crazy simple to make. If you want to make one too (it is so hard to find ones that I like) this is all you have to do. Get a sewing machine, some pins and two flat sheets (for a queen duvet I used double sheets). Yeah, there really aren’t many materials that you need.

What do we do now? Well, but the nice sides of the sheets together and pin all the sides, if you have a pattern you can try to match them, I got around this by using one side patterned and the other plain. Allow cats to “help.”

Next step? Sew three of the sides shut, leaving the bottom. I then did a little bit of sewing on the sides of the bottom, about 6 cm from each end. Then to make the new cover stay on my duvet better (I hate how they always slide apart), I attached little scraps to the top inside corners and added a fabric loop to the top corners of my duvet.

That’s it! It’s just that easy. I really don’t know much about sewing and even I managed to crank one out in about 1 hour and the only reason it took that long was because I three kitty “helpers.”

Good luck if you decide to give making a duvet a go 🙂

2012 in review

I started this blog June 2008 – as a way for my family to keep up with my cats. My very first post was about the addition of Barkis to my family.  Over the last 4.5 years I’ve started blogging about everything in my life, from the cats, trips, ideas, cakes I’ve made and anything else I’ve been able to think of. The most amazing part is this, it’s not JUST my family reading it any more! Somehow I’ve managed to find readers from around the globe. This is the power of the Internet.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog. It really shows how much this little blog for keeping up with my family has grown. It’s not a huge blog, but lets be honest, I don’t spend enough time on it for that. You’re lucky if I post once a month!

Without any further delay, here is the 2012 report for Kirsten’s Life.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 2,800 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 5 years to get that many views.

Oliver and Barkis

It seems like it’s been a while since I mentioned the bundles of fur I live with . . . don’t worry, but are still alive and well 🙂 They are spending their time sleeping, playing, eating and watching the world outside. They haven’t been doing anything crazy or exciting. Hence the lack of posts!

That said, last weekend I was off to Guide camp and the cats go to go to their own camp. A whole weekend away from home at a friend’s house – they went to terrorize Matt (since the two of them seem to miss Matt it seemed like a good idea). According to Matt, they were mostly behaved, according to the amount the slept upon return, I’m not sure I belive him. Oh well, they had fun.

Since the cats haven’t been up in the great wild Interwebs for a while I thought I’d pop up a few photos of them. They are pretty cute after all 🙂

February’s Book – Tailchaser’s Song

As you all know at the beginning of the year I set two goals, one of them being to read one book a month. The book for January was Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips, of which you can find my thoughts on here. My book for February was Tailchaser’s Song by Tad Williams.

Matt loaned this book to me since he figured I would enjoy it. It’s great having friends you can share books with 🙂 I’m glad he did send me on my way with it as I quite happily carried it around with me for the better part of a month. Pulling it out to read every time I found myself waiting on something!

Following in the description found on the back of the book:

“Meet Fritti Tailchaser, a ginger tom cat of rare courage and curiosity, a born survivor in a world of heroes and villains, of powerful feline gods and whiskery legends about those strange, furless, erect creatures called M’an. Join Tailchaser on his magical quest to rescue his catfriend Hushpad – a quest that will take him all the way to cat hell and beyond . . . .”

After reading the back I saw his point, I have two cats what is not to love about a book staring a cat? I’ll be honest, I was leery, very unsure about the book. I didn’t think it really sounded like something I was overly interested in. But hey, Matt knows me fairly well so if he thought I would like it, I’ll try to trust his judgement and give it a try (after all, he suggested Brida, which as we all know I LOVED).

For the first little bit I was sure I’d been right, that I wasn’t very interested in it. Then all of a sudden I became invested in the characters and I couldn’t put the darn book down. It took me over a month to read the first part of the book, but the bulk of it was read over the course of a couple of lunch breaks and an evening in front of the fire. I hate to admit it, but darn it all, Matt was right! (don’t anyone tell him I said that!).

Verdict – another book that you all should head out and read!

Photo Shoot

Years ago, when I only had one cat, I managed to score a free photo shoot of said cat.  This has meant that since I became a two cat household, I only had nice pictures of one of my cats.  Now I try to always remember that they are cats, not children, but I still felt a little guilty about it.  Enter Groupon.  I was able to get a photo shoot and some pictures for only $30, of course I took it!  Okay, so it ended up being a little bit more because I ordered several extra photos, but still, it wasn’t too bad.

Both Oliver and Barkis were stars.  I went in with the hope of getting at least one nice picture of Barkis, and if it was possible to get a nice one with Oliver even better.  Well, they did such a good job that I ended up a bunch of fantastic photos of both of them, separate and together.  Here are my stunningly handsome kitty cats.  (All photos taken by Wyse Photos).

Doctor Who Kitteh…

Okay, so this isn’t new, heck, I’ve previously posted this on my Facebook.  I also realize that not everyone follows me on Facebook (hi Mom!).  I do know that I heart heart this video.  Yes, I did use heart twice in that last sentence, it’s a Doctor Who reference…

Anyway, this video combines one of my all time favorite cat videos (ninja cat) with one of the most terrifying Doctor Who episodes ever (Don’t Blink).  Thank-fully this video not scary, it is however fantastically done.  Enjoy 🙂

As I said, I heart heart this video!
