She lives!!!!!!

Okay, so I kind of disappeared for a REALLY long time. I’m sorry. No excuses, I just sort of sucked at writing, let alone even remembering I had this little blog. But I’m back. I’ll give a super quick re-cap since I disappeared:

Mike completed a truck driving course, and together we determined that was not right for our family.

Towards the end of the truck driving course we discovered I was pregnant!!!

We took a week long trip to Cuba and soaked up lots of sun.

Mike became a FedEx courier, we found the job that fit our family.

In December, two whole weeks late, we welcomed little Gavin into the world.

The year of maternity leave – I loved spending my time with Gavin

Nova Scotia was hammered with snow and ice – so much so our driveway ended up 8 feet longer than normal and the ice bent the rim on one of my tires!

I decided to enter the world of direct sales and became a Steeped Tea consultant. I love their teas and love the company

We traveled to Ontario twice (once for a Steeped Tea conference, and once just because)

My mom came to visit several time, my brother and father also made a trip each out to see us and baby Gavin.

Our cat, Barkis, went missing for 10 very long and stressful days.

I left my Guide unit and joined a Pathfinder unit.

November 30th rolled and around, and I made my return to work and Gavin started Day Care.

December 10 we celebrated Gavin’s first birthday.

Mike changed careers at FedEx, and became a ramp handler

I finally re-discovered this blog and am now going to drive you all nuts again!

Oliver and Barkis

It seems like it’s been a while since I mentioned the bundles of fur I live with . . . don’t worry, but are still alive and well ūüôā They are spending their time sleeping, playing, eating and watching the world outside. They haven’t been doing anything crazy or exciting. Hence the lack of posts!

That said, last weekend I was off to Guide camp and the cats go to go to their own camp. A whole weekend away from home at a friend’s house – they went to terrorize Matt (since the two of them seem to miss Matt it seemed like a good idea). According to Matt, they were mostly behaved, according to the amount the slept upon return, I’m not sure I belive him. Oh well, they had fun.

Since the cats haven’t been up in the great wild Interwebs for a while I thought I’d pop up a few photos of them. They are pretty cute after all ūüôā

Photo Shoot

Years ago, when I only had one cat, I managed to score a free photo shoot of said cat.¬† This has meant that since I became a two cat household, I only had nice pictures of one of my cats.¬† Now I try to always remember that they are cats, not children, but I still felt a little guilty about it.¬† Enter Groupon.¬† I was able to get a photo shoot and some pictures for only $30, of course I took it!¬† Okay, so it ended up being a little bit more because I ordered several extra photos, but still, it wasn’t too bad.

Both Oliver and Barkis were stars.  I went in with the hope of getting at least one nice picture of Barkis, and if it was possible to get a nice one with Oliver even better.  Well, they did such a good job that I ended up a bunch of fantastic photos of both of them, separate and together.  Here are my stunningly handsome kitty cats.  (All photos taken by Wyse Photos).

Rainy Day Beauty

Today is a rainy day.¬† The sky is grey, the grass is slick, and the harbour is foggy.¬† It’s a day to stay inside with a¬†cup of tea (or hot lemon water as the case may be), a good book and a crackling fire.¬† It’s a day for cats to curl up close by and to purr¬†contentedly¬†– granted, mine are both nowhere near me!¬† It’s the kind of day that makes you long for balmy¬†Summer evenings, or even cool crisp, yet sunny Winter days.¬† None of this middle of the road, neither hot nor cold, miserable no good weather.

It’s also the kind of day where you get to see things like this:

And if you look a little closer, and you’re feeling at least a little brave, something like this:

Let’s be honest, I have no issues with Spiders, so I was able to get in even closer yet, where I got to privilege of capturing this:

Rain drops may have been falling on my head, but they were clinging to this little guy for dear life!  As amazing as spiders are on a normal day, there is something almost magical about spiders, and their nets, when there are drops of water weighing them down.

Lets end with one more look at the amazing patterns and strength you can find in nature, or this case, my own back yard!

I love our Earth and all the creatures that inhabit it!

Where’s The Octopus?

¬†You¬† may or may not be aware that once upon a time my life’s ambition was to be a Marine Biologist.¬† There were many contributing factors that lead me away from Marine Biology and instead¬†to get my degree in Biology (Microbial Genetic Evolution to be exact), but that’s not really relevent¬†at this time.¬† That said, I still have a soft spot for everything Marine and will one day even have a mini-reef in my place.¬† Side note: salt water tanks are super cool!¬† Because of this deep down love for Marine Life I couldn’t help but be drawn to the following video.¬† I exclaimed out loud while watching it, I stared at the screen puzzled and I promptly fell in love with it.¬† I hope you enjoy it, it really is an example of how amazing and diverse the animals on this planet are.

(I can’t embed the video in my post, but if you follow the link below you’ll be able to see it on ScienceFriday.com)

First Love

Everyone has a first love, someone, or something, that they will never forget and that shaped them in some way.¬† Most people it’s a person, for some of us, it’s an animal.¬† I have had a few. My Oliver is without a doubt my first Kitty cat love.¬† Our Riley will always have a very special place in my heart.¬† When it comes down to the very nitty-gritty, it was Shannon that is my true first love.¬†

Shannon was already 7 years old when I entered the picture, and from what I hear he adapted fantastically to the addition of a screaming, demanding, attention seeking baby (some things never change, eh?).¬† I’ve heard so many stories of how he’d watch over me, or just move over so I could have fun without hurting him.¬† I remember playing in the basement in Germany and talking away to Shannon as if he was part of the game with me.¬† Really, he was a great dog.¬†

I don’t remember the day he passed away, though Mom has told the story more times than I can count.¬† Turns out just as Shannon took my arrival into his life, I took his departure from my with relatively good spirts…I was only six.¬† If you’ve done the math on this one that does mean that Shannon made it to 13 years – just shy of his fourteenth birthday non-the-less.

So today we remember someone, or something, that touched us.  Please share your stories, or at the very least take a few moments of your day to look back and remember.
